Owners of hotels and eateries in Delta State have been asked to ensure their operations are in line with global environmental best practices in order not to run foul of the law.
The Chairman, Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon Bazim Chinye, gave the charge while reacting to the sealing of some hotels in Sapele by the combined team enforcing compliance with environmental laws.
He noted that most of the hospitality facilities and eateries had not registered with the approved PSPs, operated illegal dump sites and discharged waste from their kitchens into unauthorized places, thereby constituting environmental hazards.
The board chairman said that appropriate sanctions would continue to be meted out to violators of the law, warning that the agency would not condone acts inimical to achieving a cleaner Delta.
Chinye explained that the current enforcement drive was all inclusive of the relevant authorities, comprising the Waste Management Board, the State Task force on Environmental Sanitation, and the Environment Department of the Councils, emphasizing that the exercise would be thorough.
